Alliance For Success (AFS) students recently had the opportunity to experience a memorable and enriching visit to Rutgers University, where they gained firsthand insight into college life, academic programs, and student support services.
The day began at the Rutgers Visitors Center with an engaging undergraduate admissions information session. From there, students boarded two campus buses for a guided tour, led by four enthusiastic Scarlet Ambassadors—two on each bus. These student ambassadors, known for their energy and passion, shared their personal Rutgers experiences in ways that truly resonated with the visiting group.
Special thanks go to Melissa Welch, Director of Campus Programs in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and her team of student ambassadors for their warm hospitality and thoughtful coordination. Their dedication created an inspiring and welcoming environment that left a lasting impression on the AFS students.
During the tour, students disembarked to explore a model residence hall, offering a closer look at the housing options available on campus. The group also toured the lively College Avenue area, where students observed campus life in full swing and gained a genuine feel for the Rutgers community.
To help students engage thoughtfully with the experience, each was given a College Visit Pros and Cons Worksheet. This tool encouraged active reflection on important aspects such as academics, campus culture, and overall fit, helping students begin to develop a personal framework for making informed college decisions.
Lunch was provided back at the Visitors Center, accompanied by a presentation on the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program. This session proved to be especially impactful, as it introduced students to the range of academic and financial support available through EOF. Their insightful questions demonstrated a growing awareness of how such resources can help make higher education more accessible.
A sincere thank you goes to Dr. Moore, whose continued mentorship and support were instrumental in coordinating this visit alongside Rutgers faculty. His involvement played a key role in the day’s success.
AFS mentor Joe D’Amore also played an important role by chaperoning the trip and capturing wonderful photos of the day. His presence and support continue to be a valuable part of the student experience, and the AFS team is deeply grateful for his ongoing commitment.
The visit concluded with inspiring closing remarks from Superintendent Moore, who encouraged students to invest in themselves and reminded them that, while the journey requires effort, they are fully capable and supported through the Lunch Break community.
When asked how many students would now consider applying to Rutgers, seven hands went up—a powerful indication of the day’s impact. To date, three students from the AFS program have applied to Rutgers as a direct result of these campus visits. Rutgers has now committed to hosting AFS students annually, solidifying a meaningful and growing partnership.
