It started as a humble request: “Would it ever be possible to come into Lunch Break during a Sunday Football game and be able to watch the game—no food…just a warm place to watch the game”, asked a client. Joanne, our amazing sous chef, didn’t hesitate to say yes. She would volunteer on Sunday and of course, if she was there and folks were hungry…she was going to cook! Word quickly spread and Lunch Break Football Sundays became an enormously fun tradition as clients, volunteers, staff and board members all enjoyed the game together on many a cold Sunday afternoon. Diane, a client of Lunch Break, spoke of the sense of community she felt when being invited to the game by friends she’s met here:
“You do all these extra and above and beyond things. People don’t need just food, they need someone to care about them. You know how many people I heard about the football game from? It’s all over Red Bank. I was on the bus, and people were like, we’re going to watch the game! We’re going to watch football at Lunch Break!”
Thanks to Joanne and a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, Board members, non-profit partners, and generous friends of Lunch Break, Super Bowl Sunday became a win for more than just the Eagles—it was a victory for our entire community.
