When Garland (“Gary”) Rose walks the polished corridors of Riverview Medical Center as an Environmental Services aide, he carries more than a set of keys and cleaning supplies – he carries the hopes of his family, the lessons of resilience, and the unwavering support of a community partnership that believes in second chances. Garland’s journey from uncertainty to meaningful employment is a testament to the transformative power of the Lunch Break Life Skills Program and Riverview Medical Center’s commitment to fostering opportunity.
Garland’s story begins far from the hospital’s bright halls. A devoted father of two sons, Garland had always placed family at the center of his life, working tirelessly in various roles to make ends meet. But like many in the community, he found himself yearning for stability and a workplace where his effort would be valued.
“My kids are my world,” Garland shares. “Everything I do is for them. I wanted to show them that hard work and hope can open new doors, no matter the challenges we face.”
The turning point in Garland’s journey came when he discovered Lunch Break, a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals through life skills training and employment resources. Garland enrolled in the Lunch Break Life Skills Program, where he found not only resume writing workshops and interview preparation, but also genuine encouragement from caring mentors.
“They didn’t just help me fill out applications. They believed in me,” Garland says. “Their support made all the difference.”
Through the Lunch Break partnership with Riverview Medical Center, Garland attended a job fair tailored for community members seeking a fresh start. The Life Skills team coached him, practiced mock interviews, and ensured he felt ready for the opportunity. Impressing Riverview’s hiring team with his dedication and readiness to contribute, Garland was offered the position of Environmental Services aide soon after the interview process – a pivotal moment that set him on his new path.
Shortly after beginning his role, Garland made the thoughtful decision to transition to the night shift. This change allowed him to be present for his children and attend his son’s college football games in MA – a priority that guided his every step.
Garland loves his job and working behind the scenes. His positive attitude and meticulous work have not gone unnoticed. He was honored with the BEE award, recognizing his outstanding effort and commitment to excellence.
Colleagues describe Garland as a source of kindness and dependability. He believes a clean, safe environment means patients and team members can focus on healing and caring.
Linda Broderick, Garland’s manager, speaks with pride about his contributions. “From day one, Garland brought energy and heart to his work. He’s the kind of team member who uplifts everyone around him. The Lunch Break partnership has been invaluable in connecting us with talented, driven individuals like Garland, whose impact radiates through our hospital.”
Linda emphasizes the ripple effect of such partnerships: “When we open doors for people in our community, we strengthen our entire organization. Garland’s story is proof that investing in people pays off – in morale, in service and in spirit.”
The Lunch Break and Riverview Medical Center partnership is more than a pathway to employment; it is a beacon of hope and renewal for the community. By matching motivated individuals with meaningful work, the program helps families find financial footing, fosters dignity and builds a stronger, more inclusive work environment. As more Lunch Break graduates join the Riverview team, their collective impact is felt in every department – a reminder that collaboration between organizations can spark lasting change.
Reflecting on his journey, Garland is filled with gratitude – for his family, for Lunch Break and for Riverview Medical Center. His advice to others is simple and profound: “Don’t give up. There are people out there who care, who want to see you succeed. Take the help, believe in yourself and keep moving forward.”
