For nearly a decade, Grace LaFata has been a familiar, welcoming presence in the Lunch Break Community Kitchen, serving meals, sharing laughs and building meaningful connections with every guest who walks through the door.

Grace’s journey to Lunch Break began during a time of unexpected transition. After a 36-year career on Wall Street, she found herself suddenly laid off and searching for a new way to stay active and engaged. A simple online search for volunteer opportunities in Monmouth County led her to Lunch Break and nearly nine years later, she’s still here, making a difference every week.

As a dedicated member of the Community Kitchen team, Grace helps prepare and serve breakfast and lunch three days a week. Whether she’s plating a hot meal or encouraging guests to add a healthy serving of vegetables, she brings warmth, humor and care to every interaction.

“What brings me joy and warms my heart is when the guests and I laugh together,” Grace shares. “They know I’m always pushing the vegetables!”

Over the years, Grace has gotten to know many of the guests personally, learning their preferences, accommodating dietary needs and building trust through consistency and kindness. From vegetarians to those with food allergies (and even a few picky eaters), Grace approaches each plate with thoughtfulness and respect.

But for Grace, volunteering is about more than just food, it’s about connection.

“One of my favorite parts of volunteering is greeting guests by their first names and checking in on how they’re doing,” she says. “It makes me smile when they know my name, too.”

Through her time at Lunch Break, Grace has not only formed strong bonds with guests, but also built lasting friendships with fellow volunteers and staff. Her story is a powerful reminder that community is created through shared moments, mutual care, and a willingness to show up.

“I am blessed to be able to give back to our community,” Grace says.

And we are grateful for volunteers like Grace, who bring heart, dedication and a little extra encouragement, especially when it comes to eating your vegetables!
