Veterans often face unique challenges upon discharge from their service.
Many experience mental illnesses such as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), anxiety, depression and/or substance abuse as a reaction to exposure to trauma during their time in service. Unfortunately, mental illness is a leading factor contributing to veteran homelessness.
These mental illnesses also create challenges for support and care. Some fail to ask for help because of the stigma associated with mental health disorders or because they are too prideful to admit they need help. In addition to issues of stigma and pride, veterans often struggle to access health care due to long wait times and trouble navigating the system.
Veterans in need often require comprehensive support, including housing, employment, medical and mental health treatment, substance abuse counseling and much more. Lunch Break, in cooperation with partner agencies, is equipped to support veterans with a comprehensive approach.
